Denise Yaghmourian Explores Rhythm, Repetition, and Presence in
Inherent Repetition at Desert Crafted
Phoenix, AZ – September 17, 2025 – Desert Crafted is proud to present Inherent
Repetition, a solo exhibition of new works by fiber artist Denise Yaghmourian,
curated by Lara Plecas. The exhibition will be on view from October 4 through
November 30, 2025, with an opening reception on October 4, from noon to 4 p.m.
Additional viewing opportunities include First and Third Fridays in November from
6–9 p.m.
Rooted in traditional sewing techniques and drawing from both domestic craft and industrial process, Yaghmourian’s work transforms fabric, thread, and unconventional materials such as hook-and-eye tape into expansive abstractcompositions. With intricate stitching layered across fields of color, her practice explores themes of repetition, structure, and contemplative presence.
“The process of making is central to my practice,” says Yaghmourian. “The rhythm of stitching, the feel of the fabric, the decisions made and remade by hand all become a form of meditation. This embodied, tactile process is where meaning takes shape, long before the work is complete.”
Deeply influenced by the minimalist and spiritual sensibility of Agnes Martin, Yaghmourian’s work invites viewers to slow down and engage with the subtle language of texture and rhythm. The exhibition reflects a lineage of memory and inheritance, rooted in her grandmother’s sewing room, while elevating overlooked everyday materials into sites of reflection and stillness.
Curator Lara Plecas notes, “Denise’s work is both grounding and expansive. Inherent Repetition offers viewers a rare opportunity to experience contemporary fiber art that creates a quiet yet powerful dialogue between materiality, presence, and consciousness.”
